Being part of the SHA Executive Committee is a rewarding opportunity to collaborate with a dedicated team of parents, working together to bring beloved events and programs to life for our entire Breakthrough community. From supporting important school initiatives to organizing fun family activities, the SHA plays a vital role in making each school year special.

Elections Timeline

  • April 1 – 12, 2025: Nominations period
  • April 19 – 26, 2025: Voting period
  • April 28 – May 2, 2025: Votes tabulated and results announced

Description of Executive Committee Positions

With the exception of the President*, anyone can be nominated to for any of the positions on the Executive Committee, including self-nominees. Get your nominations ready for April 1!

*To ensure continuity and prevent complete turnover of the Executive Committee from year to year, only current Executive Committee members may be nominated for President.

  • PRESIDENT
    • Runs general and Executive Committee meetings;
    • Serves as the primary contact for the Breakthrough Montessori administration;
    • Serves as a member of the Breakthrough Montessori Board of Directors and updates the general membership on  Board activities;
    • Assigns or delegates duties to other officers, Room Parents or Committee Members.
       
  • VICE PRESIDENT
    • Assists the president and carries out the president’s duties if there is an absence or inability to serve;
    • Coordinates all standing committees (e.g., fundraising, diversity & inclusion committees);
    • Determines whether there is a quorum at each meeting and ensures compliance with meeting rules of order.
       
  • SECRETARY
    • Keeps records of the SHA;
    • Takes, records, and distributes meeting minutes to the membership.
       
  • TREASURER
    • Receives all funds of the organization;
    • Keeps an accurate record of receipts and expenditures;
    • Pays out funds approved by the Executive Committee;
    • Prepares an annual budget for review and approval of the full membership;
    • Makes a full report at the end of the year.
       
  • DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS
    • Maintains SHA listservs, calendars, social media and websites;
    • Sends notices of meetings to the membership;
    • Develops SHA communications plan(s);
    • Assists the school administration and staff in their communications programming, as needed.
       
  • DIRECTOR OF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
    • Oversees SHA programming to foster the school’s efforts to promote ethnic, racial, religious and socioeconomic diversity in the student population, administration, and staff;
    • Coordinates with the school administration and staff to ensure SHA communications account for the diversity of school families.

Self-nominations are welcome and warmly encouraged!

SHA Bylaws | Article V – Nominations and Elections

  1. Officers will be elected and announced no fewer than six weeks prior to the end of the preceding school year.
  2. According to the timeline below, an ad hoc Elections Task Force shall be convened, to be headed by an SHA member who is not a current elected officer. The Elections Task Force shall be responsible for communicating to all Association members the procedures for nominations and voting.  All communications regarding elections shall be made in English and the second-most-common home language spoken by the members of the Association according to results from the home language survey.
  3. Officer elections will be held according to the following timeline:
    • No fewer than 12 weeks prior to the end of the school year, the Election Task Force will convene and announce that they are taking nominations for the following school year.  The nomination process will last for two weeks.
    • No fewer than 10 weeks prior to the end of the school year, nominations will be due to the Task Force.
    • No fewer than 8 weeks prior to the end of the school year, the ballot will be made public to the Association. 
    • Members of the Association will have one week to cast their vote.
    • No fewer than 7 weeks prior to the end of the school year, voting will end.
    • Officers for the following year will be announced the first week of May (6 weeks prior to the end of the school year).
